| The objectives of marine protected areas (MPA), such as Reunion’s Marine Reserve founded in 2007, are (i) protect habitats (ecosystems) and resources (biodiversity) from increasing pressure due to a major urban, economic and recreational development; ii) manage uses and conflicts between traditional fisheries, spear-fishing, diving and recreational activities inside the coastal zone. These goals necessitate monitoring tools such as indicators and diagnostics. The PAMPA programme involves seven MPA including the Natural Marine Reserve of La Reunion (RNMR). | - The AMBIO project conducted a comprehensive video-based baseline assessment of coral reef fish communities and associated habitats in the New Caledonian lagoons. The survey relies on remote unbaited underwater video observations, using the STAVIRO rotating technique. - The study pertains to the reefs of Astrolabe, Pétrie and Walpole Island, located within the Coral Sea Natural Park. The survey conducted in 2014 covers the entire area, and the sampling design was stratified according to reef type. 95 stations were validated. They were analyzed to characterize the habitat surrounding each station, and fish communities, based on a list of 565 fish species (cf. | The diversity of reef ecosystems, the multiplicity of reef resource uses and the breadth of the range of the island socio-cultural contexts concerned make coral reef fisheries (CRF) management in the South Pacific a complex task. | • In order to assess the sustainability of fish resources in the Natural Marine Park of Mayotte (Western Indian Ocean), indicators and monitoring protocols must be determined. • This study relied on the underwater video technique STAVIRO for assessing fish communities and resources. A pilot survey was conducted in Nov. 2014 in the south-east quarter of the Mayotte lagoon, an area encompassing the marine reserves of Longogori, M’Bouzi and the Saziley Marine Park.
